Bali, Indonesia
Padang Padang is a world-class left-hand reef break on Bali's Bukit Peninsula, often called the Pipeline of Bali for its deep, hollow barrels that can run 50 metres over sharp, shallow reef. The wave needs a solid swell to turn on — ideally head-and-a-half to double overhead and beyond — and the SE trade winds blow directly offshore into perfectly groomed, barreling walls during the dry season from May to October. The takeoff is steep and critical, the reef is dangerously shallow on the end section, and strong currents can drag surfers over the reef as water sucks out between sets. This is an experts-only wave where a great session could be the barrel of a lifetime or result in a broken board and a trip to the hospital. Access is via a narrow staircase carved through a cliff-side temple, with a small entrance fee of around 10,000 IDR, and monkeys are common along the path. For less experienced surfers, Padang Padang Rights (Baby Padang) on the other side offers a mellower wave with an easy channel paddle-out.
