Rincon, Puerto Rico
Tres Palmas is the Caribbean's premier big wave spot, a powerful reef break in Rincón, Puerto Rico that doesn't even start breaking on its outer reef until waves reach double overhead — often compared to Oahu's Sunset Beach for its raw power and unpredictability. The wave focuses long-period west-northwest swells into heavy, meaty peaks over a deep reef, with faces recorded up to 30 feet, and is best during winter months with January being peak season and east offshore winds creating clean conditions. This is strictly an experts-only wave requiring big wave experience, proper equipment, and respect for the infamous sneaker sets that surge in when there is any west component to the swell. A deep channel runs south of the reef providing a safe entry and exit route. Access is easy with free parking at the beach, and the Rincón area offers plenty of accommodation and amenities for visiting surfers.
